Former student of The Junoon Gurukul, Yogini Gavandar, an early Dance enthusiast, writes about the difference Junoon made in her life and how it influenced her perception of Dance.
My journey with ‘The Junoon Gurukul’ has been more than just Dance; it has been a path of self-discovery, cultural appreciation, and lifelong passion.
When I first joined The Junoon Gurukul, I didn’t know what to expect. As a person who has always shown intense interest in Dance, I auditioned for the gurukul without even a second thought. After my selection, I realized gurukul wasn’t just another dance class; it was an entirely new way of learning. Rooted in the traditional teaching method and a doorway into a deeper understanding of expression, discipline, and community.
From the very first day, there was a different energy—quiet, focused, and full of intention. We began each morning listening to ragas and understanding the stories behind the tunes. This helped us align our minds with our bodies and prepared us for the day ahead.
Then we smoothly transitioned into our practice and warm-up routines. Instead of rushing, Ms.Mythili sat with us, helping us feel the rhythm in our breath and our movements. That small shift changed everything.
What truly set Junoon apart was its parallel arts’ approach. Alongside dance, we explored literature, theatre, music, and even visual arts. I remember one session where we were asked to interpret the Shiva’s story through movement—it was challenging but liberating. For the first time, I saw how all these forms were threads in the same tapestry. That week changed how I viewed storytelling itself.
Apart from this, bringing the essence of our Junoon sessions to life through painting felt like dancing with colors on canvas.
Performing in the trimester-end showcase was another highlight. I was nervous, of course, but more than that, I felt proud. Our group had worked so hard—not just on steps, but on trust, timing, and emotion. Sharing that journey on stage was more powerful than any applause.
Looking back, The Junoon Gurukul was more than an arts program. It was a space of growth—physical, emotional, and spiritual. It taught me to listen more deeply, move more honestly, and live more presently. I carry those lessons with me every day.
