Meeting Dr. Rathna

During Dr. Rathna’s brief visit to Bombay, we had the privilege of spending time in conversation and observation with her. This short piece reflects on those moments, listening, learning, and witnessing her approach to Classical Arts, teaching, and tradition in practice.

Our time with Dr. Rathna, who was in Bombay for a brief while, was truly special and deeply nourishing for all of us. We shared long, meaningful conversations around the Classical Arts, reflecting on how tradition can be preserved with integrity while still allowing space for evolution and contemporary relevance. The exchanges were unhurried and heartfelt, often filled with warmth and laughter as she fondly recalled stories from her own student days. Listening to her journey reminded us that every accomplished artist is shaped not only by rigour and discipline, but also by curiosity, humility, and the quiet joy of lifelong learning.

We then had the opportunity to witness her class, a rare and enriching experience. What stood out immediately was her keen attention to detail and her ability to guide with kindness while maintaining firmness. Every correction carried clarity and care. Watching her teach Ms. Mythili, allowed us to see her philosophy come alive in practice, where precision, patience, and encouragement coexisted seamlessly. It was a class where teaching was not just instruction, but a living demonstration of values.

Beyond technique, Dr. Rathna’s stories were deeply inspiring. She spoke of Classical Dance with immense respect, honouring its lineage while emphasising the responsibility of the teacher in shaping a student’s journey. Her reflections reinforced how powerful methodology can be, and how a sensitive, committed teacher can influence not just the Dancer’s skill, but their relationship with the art itself. Our time with her left us inspired, grounded, and gently reminded of why we do what we do.
